Taça de Portugal Competition Overview
The Taça de Portugal is Portugal's premier knockout cup competition featuring clubs from the top tiers down to regional divisions. Benfica, Porto, and Sporting face lower-league opposition in single-elimination matches (some two-legged) through to the final. No traditional standings exist—progression through rounds determines success.
As a knockout tournament, the Taça de Portugal doesn't use league-style standings. Follow team advancement from early rounds (lower divisions) through rounds where Primeira Liga clubs enter, round of 16, quarter-finals, two-legged semi-finals, and the single-match final. Cup upsets are a cherished tradition.
